Hydroelectric Development on Umbata Falls
Site Area Details

The Water Power

1. Intake
Water is diverted from the river to the intake

2. Tunnel
Water is conveyed through the power tunnel excavated in rock (total length of 291m)

3. Powerhouse
Water activates the turbines in the powerhouse.

The head, difference of elevation between the upstream water level and the downstream water level, is 35m

The first 241m section of the tunnel is unlined. Natural Rock cover is sufficient to resist water pressure.

The last 50m section of the tunnel is steel lined to resist water pressure and avoid losses of water and power.

Two parameters determine the capacity of an hydroelectric Project:
1. The flow (m3/s or cms) which activate the Turbine/Generator Group
2. The head of water which increases the water movement.
