Hydroelectric Development on Umbata Falls
Site Area Details

Salient Features

Low Impact Criteria:
Run of river concept involving no water storage
Permanent instream flow (ecological flow)
The ecological flow is given and controlled by an overflow crest structure with a rubber weir
Limited visual impact with a 291m power tunnel
Fish habitat protection

Technical Features and Production:
Power plant rated flow 65m3/s
Gross head : 35m
Net head with two groups in operation
     32.6m (Gross head Head Losses)
Installed rated capacity: 18.9MW
Powerhouse with two units (turbine/generator)
The layout with two units increase the flexibility for production, related to the high
variability of flow during the year.
Annual power generation : 96.9 Giga Watt hour (GWh) or 96,900 MWh

Flow Management
During the operation, a minimum flow is maintained in the falls. The flow in the falls increase naturally during the Spring Flood in May and June, and during the Fall time Flood in November. During those three months, the powerhouse is operating at 100% capacity, with a flow of 65m3/s. During the rest of the year, the powerhouse runs with the natural flow.

This operation is typical of a run-off-river hydroelectric project. It offers the advantage to produce power using natural water flow avoiding the necessity of a reservoir. Its capacity consequently varies with the natural river flow.
