Project Location and Background

Begetekong
Power Corporation is propsing to develop a 22.8 MW Hydroelectric
facility on the White River at Umbata Falls. |

|
The White River
is a large, northern, brown water river of variable depth which
arises southeast of the Town of White River and flows for approximately
200 km before discharging into Lake Superior. |
|
|
The river contains
numerous rapids and waterfalls including Chicagonce Rapids,
Anglers Falls, Baptismon Rapids, Turnball Falls, Umbata Falls
and Chigamiwinigum Falls. |

Pukaskwa
National Park is located downstream of the project site.
|
|
|
|
White Lake Provincial
Park is loacted upsgtream on the southwest shore of White Lake.
An addition to the park is proposed to extend it to Pukaskwa
National Park.

|
|
|
The White Lake dam,
owned and operated by the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR)
controls water levels on White Lake. |
|
|
|
MNR identified 9
potential hydro power sites on the river in 1991. |
|
|
|
Four future sites
were allocated to two local First Nations: the Pic Mobert
(3 sites) and the Ojibways of the Pic River (1 site) in 1993.

|
The Ojibways of the Pic River and
Innergex II Inc. (an energy development company) formed Begetekong
Power Corporation Inc. to develop the hydroelectric potential
of the Umbata Falls site. |

|
Planning for the development started
in 2001. |
