Hydroelectric Development on Umbata Falls
Project Overview

Project Location and Background

Begetekong Power Corporation is propsing to develop a 22.8 MW Hydroelectric facility on the White River at Umbata Falls.

The White River is a large, northern, brown water river of variable depth which arises southeast of the Town of White River and flows for approximately 200 km before discharging into Lake Superior.

The river contains numerous rapids and waterfalls including Chicagonce Rapids, Anglers Falls, Baptismon Rapids, Turnball Falls, Umbata Falls and Chigamiwinigum Falls.

Pukaskwa National Park is located downstream of the project site.

White Lake Provincial Park is loacted upsgtream on the southwest shore of White Lake. An addition to the park is proposed to extend it to Pukaskwa National Park.

The White Lake dam, owned and operated by the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) controls water levels on White Lake.

MNR identified 9 potential hydro power sites on the river in 1991.

Four future sites were allocated to two local First Nations: the Pic Mobert (3 sites) and the Ojibways of the Pic River (1 site) in 1993.

The Ojibways of the Pic River and Innergex II Inc. (an energy development company) formed Begetekong Power Corporation Inc. to develop the hydroelectric potential of the Umbata Falls site.

Planning for the development started in 2001.
